		Every child
should have a CD of Sergey Prokofiev's classic,  PETER AND THE WOLF.  I
like the CD that has Benjamin Britten's YOUNG PEOPLES GUIDE TO THE
ORCHESTRA on the other side. Both are instructive re the instruments of
the orchestra. The characters in PETER AND THE WOLF all have themes that
are played by a particular instrument in the orchestra. For example,
Grandfather is portrayed by the deep voice of the bassoon.  YOUNG
PEOPLES GUIDE TO THE ORCHESTRA is for older children or  grandparents
who are curious about the individual sounds of an orchestra's
instruments. The work is subtitled Variations and Fugue on a Theme by
Purcell and is based on a dance tune by Henry Purcell (1659-95) The
orchestra introduces the music and then each family of instruments, from highest to
lowest, is introduced individually, playing variations on the theme. The
work closes with a grand fugue based on Purcell's original theme. |
