  TITLE     PAPIER MACHE JACK-O-LANTERN
DESCRIPTION     Wrap a balloon with papier mache and make a pumpkin
DETAILS     This is a lengthy project which extends over several days as you need drying time. It's also messy. Begin by making the glue. We used wallpaper paste which we bought at the local hardware store, but you can make your own. Mix 1/2 C flour with 1/2 C water. When the mixture is thin, runny and free from lumps, add 2 cups boiling water. Gently boil 2 or three minutes, stirring constantly until mixture thickens. Cool before using. Tear the newspaper into strips about one inch wide. Blow up a round balloon, closing it with a rubber band, the most effective way to seal in the air. Spread some newspaper to protect your work surface. Dip strips of paper into the glue and wrap strips around the balloon until the entire surface is covered. We actually used a paintbrush after our fingers got too gluey. You will need at least three layers with overnight drying time for each layer. When the last layer is on, allow the project to dry several days before you pop and remove the balloon inside. To make your pumpkin sit flat, place it on a dampened cloth for several hours, softening the bottom. When soft make an indentation in the bottom to keep the pumpkin from rolling. Paint the pumpkin orange or apply another layer of papier mache using orange tissue paper. We did both. Dry. Use black paint or markers for the face or cut out. We decided to play it safe and cut out our eyes, nose and mouth from black construction paper, gluing them in place. We were not going to risk all the preceding work with a botched facial expression. USES: We cut an opening in the top of our pumpkin so we can fill it with candies for our trick-or-treaters. Remember your pumpkin is paper, highly flammable, don't put a candle in it.
